Day 40- Oct. 8 and Day 41- Oct. 9, 2010

Day 40- Oct. 8- Today we went and visited 2 cemeteries. The first was the small family cemetery "Angell Lot #SM027" in Smithfield, RI. DH has two 5th great-grand aunts and uncles: Job Angell & Lydia Fenner and Ezekiel Angell & Ruth Sprague that were buried here in the late 1700s and early 1800s. There were also about 20 Angell cousins in this cemetery. The grave stones were all in fair to poor condition but we were able to take some photos and confirm information that we have.

Next we drove to Glocester, RI to the large Acotes Hill- AKA Chepachet Cemetery. DH has a 3rd Great-grand uncle Thomas Owen and his wife Martha Arnold buried there along with lots of cousins. We had about 50 names mainly Owen with a few Irons, Paine, and Whipple. Thanks to a man who worked there we were able to locate all except 2 of the names we had but it did take several hours. We also found several other of DH's relatives. Our last stop was at the Peleg Arnold (DH's cousin) Tavern built about 1690 on the Great Road in North Smithfield, RI. It now appears to be an apartment or boarding house.

Day 41- Oct. 9- Today we drove to Warwick, RI to see the Aldrich Mansion which is now rented out for weddings. It was built for Senator Nelson W. Aldrich (DH's 6th cousin) in 1896. His daughter Abby married John D. Rockefeller, JR. who was the father of VP Nelson Rockefeller (DH's 8th & 10th cousin). Unfortunately the estate is large and behind iron gates and a stone wall.

We then drove to Pawtuxet, RI to see the John Waterman Arnold (DH's 4th cousin) House which was built in the late 1700s.

Our next stop was to photograph Col. Ephrain Bowen and his wife Sarah Angell's house (DH 2nd cousin). He was the last surviving member of the band that destroyed the schooner Gaspee in the mid 1700s.
